Weber predicts top goalie battle

Genting Casino Coventry Blaze coach Chuck Weber believes their Elite League play-off semi-final against Cardiff Devils could be decided by whoever wins the goaltending battle.

Canadian Brian Stewart was named the league's Netminder of the Year last season and helped Blaze lift the play-off trophy by beating Sheffield Steelers in the final last April.

He has a 90.8 saves percentage this season while Devils' Ben Bowns, the Great Britain number one, has a 91.8 saves percentage and a league-best 2.49 goals against average.

Both players have been short-listed for Netminder of the Year this season, along with Miika Wiikman (Nottingham Panthers), and will go head to head in the first semi-final.

Weber said: "We are a team that has always relied on Stewie, that is part of our make-up.

"Ben Bowns has come on leaps and bounds from last year and is a very important player for them.

"Of all the British players in the league he might have been the best one this year.

"But Stewie loves these moments. He was huge for us last year and he will be again. Both of them might not have the final say but they will have a lot to say."
