Phillips shut-out leads Blaze to victory

Storm 0
Blaze 2

A fine defensive display and man-of-the-match performance from netminder Jamie Phillips helped the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze to a 0-2 road victory against the Manchester Storm in the Elite League.

Blaze began the brighter but an equally strong start from Matt Ginn in the Storm net kept them at bay.

The deadlock was broken on 14.34 when Blaze’s top-scorer Evan Bloodoff broke short-handed, used the defenceman as a screen and fired past Ginn for 0-1.

Just past the half-way mark Coventry thought their lead was doubled as Andrew Johnson fired home but the effort was to be ruled out after video review.

Powerplay opportunities came and went for both sides, and it took until the final few seconds for the game to be decided once and for all.

With Dallas Ehrhardt taking a two-minute penalty, followed by an abuse of official game misconduct, Blaze with the slim 0-1 lead finished the game on the powerplay.

Chasing the equaliser, Manchester levelled up the out-skaters by pulling netminder Ginn which allowed Coventry’s Ross Venus, playing in his 601st total game for the club to score into the empty net for a final score of 0-2.
