MOTM Lake helps Belfast beat Blaze
Former forward Ben Lake put in a man-of-the-match performance to help his current side Belfast Giants to a 4-1 victory over the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze at the SSE Arena.
Coventry travelled with Finnish forward Janne Laakkonen back in the line-up but were without Canadian Dillon Lawrence after he picked up an injury mid-week in Cardiff.
The first period was a physical affair with David Broll and Bobby Farnham almost coming to blows.
After killing two early penalties, Belfast took a 1-0 lead at 13.28 through the energetic Lake.
It was 2-0 on 27.44 when Liam Morgan hit home a cross ice pass from Lewis Hook, his second assist of the night.
Blaze got on the board at 29.27 with their man-of-the-match Matt Pohlkamp re-directing a Dillon Eichstadt shot into the net for 2-1.
Despite Coventry having much of the play after their goal it was Belfast who scored again through Jordan Smotherman (36.17). Brian Ward grabbing his second helper on the tidy finish.
Lake was then again influential to put Belfast 4-1 up whilst short-handed, breaking with speed and feeding Giants’ top-scorer Curtis Hamilton who made no mistake at 47.35.
The remaining minutes passed by with little incident as the Giants shut down the Blaze offence to end the game 4-1.
