Captain Schiestel returns
The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze are delighted to announce that club captain Drew Schiestel has agreed to return for the 2020/21 Elite League season.
It will be the 31-year-old’s second season with the organisation having joined last summer on the back of winning a playoff title with the Cardiff Devils.
Schiestel, who stands at 6’1” with a powerful left shot started his hockey journey in the OHL. Over 4 years he featured in 267 regular season and playoff games for the Mississauga/Niagara IceDogs collecting an impressive 132 points.
Upon completion of the 2006/07 OHL season, Schiestel was picked in the second round of the NHL draft, 59th overall by the Buffalo Sabres.
Once junior was over, Schiestel signed a 3-year entry-level contract with the Sabres and spent this time with their AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates. In 2010/11 he was selected as an AHL all-star.
He went on to play 247 AHL regular season and Calder Cup playoff games before turning his head to Europe, signing in one of its highest leagues, the DEL with Düsseldorfer EG.
The season in Germany was followed by a year in Denmark (Rungsted Seier Capital) before Schiestel returned to the United States for a short stint in the ECHL with Indy Fuel.
Schiestel’s European journey then continued in the Austrian EBEL (Fehérvár AV19) and Norway (Lørenskog), before he arrived in the UK with Cardiff.
In total he has played in 90 Elite League competition games, producing 45 points from the blue-line.
Head Coach Danny Stewart said, “Getting our Captain back was an integral part in us planning for next season. He is a huge part of our leadership group that played a big part in our success last season.
“On the ice Drew is as good a two-way defender as any in the league. For me he’s arguably the most elite skater in the league, which allows him to play a very good 200-foot game.
“He is another great pro who comes to work every day and that rubs off on others. He will again play a massive part in all situations for us. He had a nasty injury last season that saw him miss some time, but he came back and didn’t miss a beat. That’s the type of character we have leading our charge once again.”
