Bloodoff strike grabs crucial cup points
The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze kick started their Challenge Cup campaign with a 3-2 victory over the Cardiff Devils at the Skydome Arena on Sunday.
Evan Bloodoff's blast direct from a Mathew Thompson face-off win won the game for the Blaze late and put a valuable two points on the board in the cup.
The night didn't start well for the Blaze as Stephen Dixon took advantage of a defensive error to give the away side a 0-1 lead just 68 seconds into the game.
Coventry responded well though and got a quick equaliser through defenceman Dane Gibson who combined with Ross Venus before finishing in close.
The Blaze took the lead early into the second period when Ryan Penny scored his first for the club on a delayed penalty at 23.57.
Netminder C.J. Motte was again in fine form for the Blaze and stood strong as the Devils began the third period on the offence.
The American was finally beaten again by Josh Lammon who pulled off a nice move to gain space before finishing neatly at 43.55.
Blaze continued to battle in front of their home crowd and were rewarded with 3.19 to go when Bloodoff fired home from Thompson's face-off win to send the Skydome wild.
The Devils pulled netminder Mac Carruth with three minutes to go chasing an equaliser but two late penalties killed their momentum as the Blaze skated out 3-2 winners.
