Blaze win league opener

Blaze 2
v
Flyers 0

The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze shut-out the Fife Flyers to win their Premier Sports Elite League opener 2-0 on Saturday at the Skydome Arena.

Netminder C.J. Motte recorded 21 saves as Shane Owen at the opposite end was beaten by Dane Gibson and Ross Venus.

For 27-year-old Gibson, the strike at 25.15 was his first professional and gave Blaze a much-deserved lead after starting the game strongly.

Despite Fife being dangerous on the counter-attack, Coventry were in control for much of the fixture, putting 30 shots on Owen.

The two points were sealed by the Blaze at 41.44 as David Broll's feed deflected in off Brit Ross Venus to make it 2-0.

The win came with a near full complement of non-homegrown players for the Blaze after they welcomed forward Ryan Penny and defenceman Joey Raats into the country ahead of the game.

The Blaze next face the Nottingham Panthers away from home on Saturday before a meeting with the Sheffield Steelers at the Skydome Arena on Sunday (6pm).
