Blaze victorious in Nottingham

Panthers 2
Blaze 5

The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze beat the Nottingham Panthers at the Motorpoint Arena to record their second Premier Sports Elite League victory in a row to start the season.

Mathieu Tousignant scored his first of the night to open the scoring at 10.31 and the Panthers had chances to double their lead with two powerplay opportunities.

The Blaze defence, though, stood firm, led by newly appointed Captain Justin Hamonic whose performance was described as "phenomenal" by coach Danny Stewart post-game.

Before the first period was over, Coventry levelled the game through the Elite League's top goal-scorer in 2019/20, Luke Ferrara who fired past Kevin Carr in the Panthers goal at 17.52.

A cross-ice pass from David Clements was re-directed into his own net by Mark Matheson at 22.04 to give Blaze a 1-2 lead before more penalty trouble followed.

With Nathan Halbert in the box, Tousignant found open space to beat C.J. Motte for his second, tying the game at two on 24.10.

Ahead of the half-way mark, Janne Laakkonen took advantage of a Carr mishandling to score Blaze's third of the evening and it was a lead they never game up.

Penalties followed for a frustrated home side and Coventry took full advantage to begin the third period scoring twice in quick succession.

Evan Bloodoff first registered on a 5-on-3 powerplay (40.30) before Ferrara bagged his second at 41.10 whilst 5-on-4.

Centre Mathew Thompson had an assist on each of the goals to add to his earlier helper on Laakaonen's marker, earning himself the man of the match award.

The Blaze next face the Sheffield Steelers at the Skydome Arena on Sunday (6pm).
