Blaze spoil Devils' BBT farewell
Genting Casino Coventry Blaze pulled off a 2-1 victory over Cardiff Devils in the final game to be played at the Big Blue Tent.
Devils took the lead at 7.40 with a short-handed marker from Joey Martin but Chris Bruton tied it up on the powerplay at 38.29 with his second goal for Blaze.
Jordan Pietrus won it for Blaze at 51.44 - his 20th marker of the season - to boost his side's chances of qualifying for the Elite League play-offs.
Goaltender Brian Stewart made 24 saves in a man of the match performance for Blaze, who moved to within one point of eighth-placed Manchester Storm.
"We talked pre-game about the chance to go down in history as the last team to win at the BBT and we did that.
"It was our first win here this season and a huge two points for us. It is a tough building to play for any team in this league. They are a fantastic side and there is a reason why they are leading the league.
"But I thought our boys showed a first-class effort. It was a workmanlike effort and we made a lot of sacrifices - we have a lot of guys in the locker room with stitches and ice bags.
"We talked pre-game about having nine play-off games remaining and we know we need to pick up as many points as we can, especially when we are not expected to." - Head Coach Chuck Weber
Blaze welcome Sheffield Steelers to the Skydome on Sunday night (5.15pm face-off) when the club will retire Dan Carlson's number 26 jersey.
Weber, whose side have won five in a row against Steelers, added:
"It is down to us to make it a fantastic weekend.
"Sheffield will be smelling blood in the water with Cardiff losing as they know a win will help them climb the table and we need to be prepared for that."
