Blaze move Flames fixture to appear on FreeSports

The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze will be moving the game vs. Guildford Flames scheduled for Wednesday 14th November 2018 at the Skydome Arena to Wednesday 21st November 2018 in order to allow the club to be part of the FreeSports TV schedule.

This game will replace the Cardiff Devils vs. Fife Flyers, which was scheduled to be shown on FreeSports that night.

Originally, the Blaze had agreed a Wednesday night fixture vs. Belfast Giants on 27th March 2019, with the intention that this match-up would be broadcast on FreeSports, however, in addition to a pencilled in away game, it later occurred that neither was found to be suitable for all parties.

This meant that the Blaze were left without a game on the free to air TV channel, disappointing both the club and our fans, thus prompting the decision to move the Guildford game, allowing for us to be part of this exciting TV deal for the league.

Blaze Managing Director Mike Cowley said, “There was an understandable negative reaction to us being the only club not to appear on the TV list of fixtures, and we didn’t like it either, so we hope that fans will be able to understand why we felt it necessary to move this fixture. It's unfortunate that the previous games we had hoped would be on the channel, won't be, but we understand and accept the reasons why. As owners and as a club, we are fully supportive of the Elite League’s TV deal with FreeSports and we're happy that we've now been able to come to an arrangement for us to be a part of it."

Elite League Director of Hockey Operations Michael Hicks continued, “We knew when the original list went out that Coventry’s omission from it was always going to stand out and cause some level of disappointment.

“When the original TV schedule was drawn up, all teams had TV coverage, unfortunately with ice availability changes and scheduling all outside of our control, it meant the original date we had agreed for the Blaze game wasn’t suitable for all parties concerned.

“We continued to work in the background alongside FreeSports and the 11 member clubs to come up with an alternate solution.

“We had to release the original schedule of TV games, to allow the build-up to the start of the season to continue and to give ourselves and our partner FreeSports the time to prepare and promote the coverage of games.

“The TV schedule was always subject to change, which was stated at the time. Both the network and myself were confident Coventry would be included throughout the season and since then, we’ve come to an agreement with all clubs involved that this new date was the best option.

“Cardiff, Fife and Guildford were more than happy to make way for Coventry and now we have the ice confirmed for the new date along with the agreement from the teams involved as well as the network we can now pencil this game in.

“Now that we have a solution, I want to thank all parties involved, particularly Guildford for agreeing to the switch to facilitate FreeSports as well as Cardiff, who were more than happy to step aside.

“Their assistance was invaluable in helping to make this possible and I look forward to seeing our great sport on television this season.”
