Blaze come out on top of ten goal thriller

Blaze 6
Storm 4

The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze came out on the right side of a ten-goal thriller, defeating the Manchester Storm 6-4 in the Elite League at the Skydome Arena.

The scoring began with Blaze’s Janne Laakkonen striking on the powerplay (06.41) but the home side were quickly pegged back as Layne Ulmer pulled off a sensational move to get through the Coventry defence and round Jamie Phillips to make it 1-1 (11.00).

Blaze man-of-the-match Charles Corcoran was next on the board, hitting home from close range after a nice feed by Johnny Curran (14.45).

Winning a loose puck battle, Luke Ferrara made it 3-1 (16.28) but with just ten seconds remaining in the first, Mario Puskarich took advantage of a Coventry mistake to end the opening period scoring at 3-2.

The game was tied at 29.11 as Manchester’s man-of-the-match Tyson Fawcett registered shorthanded on a breakaway.

Coventry were then forced to battle their way through a crucial six minutes of penalty-kill time with Corcoran sitting 4 minutes for a high-stick and David Clements holding.

During which, Ross Venus who is celebrating his testimonial season with the club managed to skate free and finish well past Matt Ginn in the Storm goal for 4-3 (45.38).

It was 4-4 on 47.20 as Storm’s Finlay Ulrick registered his first professional goal. The Brit well congratulated by teammates on his return to the bench.

The game-winner, and another first pro strike came on 51.54 as Chris Pohlkamp’s speculative effort found its way through a cluster of players and into the back of the net for 5-4.

Looking for the equaliser late in the game and with Ginn pulled for the extra skater, Manchester were to concede again as Laakkonen hit home into the empty net for his second of the night and complete the ten-goal game 6-4.
