Air the Bear this Sunday vs. Storm

The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze will begin a hectic month of Elite League fixtures on Sunday at the Skydome Arena as they take on the Manchester Storm with a 5.30pm face-off.

The game will be our annual ‘Air the Bear’ night in aid of Free Radio’s Mission Christmas in support of Cash for Kids.

1 in 3 local children are living in poverty, and we want to help make this Christmas special for those disadvantaged with this initiative.

We’re asking everyone coming to the game to please bring a BRAND-NEW teddy bear/soft toy (in a bag, new with tags if possible please), which you can then throw on to the ice following Blaze’s first goal of the night (*fingers crossed* otherwise at the end of the game).

With the Skydome netting, we appreciate that it’s not easy to throw the bears on from every seat, so there will be a short delay to allow everyone an opportunity to air their bear.

If you can't make it to the game, you can still support Free Radio's Cash for Kids in several ways.

What exactly is Air the Bear?

The first recordered Air the Bear or otherwise known, 'Teddy Bear Toss' was held by Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League of Canada back in 1993-94. Since then the event has been hosted by numerous teams all around the world, including the Coventry Blaze for multiple seasons.

Supporters are encouraged to bring teddy bears and other soft toys to the game, throw them onto the ice when the home team scores its first goal. The toys are then gathered up to be donated as Christmas presents to hospitals or charities.

The AHL's Hershey Bears are the current world record holders for most soft toys thrown on to the ice, officially coming in at 34,798 toys in 2018.

The massive haul also significantly tops the previous world record of 28,815, which was set by the Western Hockey League's Calgary Hitmen in 2015.
