Three games in six days against the Cardiff Devils proved too much for a short-benched Genting Casino Coventry Blaze as their energy ran out in a 6-2 defeat at Ice Arena Wales on bank holiday Monday.

The Blaze travelled to Cardiff for the behind closed doors game without David Broll and Mathew Thompson, plus defenceman Joey Raats and forward Alec Marsh who were both ill.

The Devils too had absentees with Stephen Dixon sitting a one game suspension, Mark Louis injured and Josh Lammon and Taran Kozun suffering food poisoning.

Coventry got off to a strong start and were rewarded at four minutes when Ross Venus scored on a rebound from a Janne Kivilahti shot.

Luke Ferrara then doubled the Blaze lead with his sixth goal in the past four games on the powerplay at 8.08.

That was as good as it got for Coventry, though, as the Devils scored six unanswered.

Trevor Cox first responded for Cardiff to make it 2-1 at 9.34.

Multiple minor penalties followed for both teams with Joshua Waller making a double minor to Ryan Penny count at 19.27 to tie the score 2-2 after 20 minutes.

To begin the second, Justin Crandall scored an individual effort to put the Devils 3-2 up at 21.45 before the pace of the game began to slow as the short bench of both teams began to show.

Marc McNulty who was picked up by Cardiff from the Manchester Storm registered his first in red following a video review at 29.35 to make it 4-2.

Sam Duggan scored the Devils’ second powerplay goal of the night at 50.46, awarded following another video review after the puck hit the back bar and came back out.

The scoring and 6-2 result was wrapped up by Brodie Reid at 53.27 who took his league leading tally of goals to 17 for the season.
