The Cardiff Devils beat the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze Elves 4-3 in a shoot-out on Boxing Day at the Skydome Arena.
The Devils took a lead through the Elite League’s leading goal-scorer Brodie Reid just 95 seconds into the game, scoring whilst open at the back post.
With two goals in less than a minute, the Blaze tied the game and took a 2-1 lead. In-form Luke Ferrara scored on a two-on-one rush 9.53 before Nate Halbert finished off a pretty passing play at 10.46.
The Devils tied the game at 16.32 through former Blaze forward Ben Davies.
Early in the second period, the game was delayed for almost an hour when the plexi glass fell from its holder following a hit in the corner, damaging the ice as it landed.
When the action resumed, Stephen Dixon grabbed the go-ahead goal for the visitors at 28.49 but Ferrara, with his second, levelled things again shortly after at 31.09.
After Dixon was ejected for a check to the head of defenceman Dane Gibson, the Blaze weren’t able to take advantage of a late five-minute powerplay.
With 38 seconds left on the clock, Taran Kozun in the Devils goal pulled off a wonder save to deny Janne Kivilahti a winner and the game went to sudden-death overtime.
At the opposite end, C.J. Motte denied Trevor Cox in terrific fashion whilst Kozun stood tall to deny Ross Venus Blaze’s best chance in overtime.
Into the shoot-out the game went where Reid, Cole Sanford all scored for the Devils and with Kozun denying Ferrara, Kivilahti and Clements, the Devils skated away with a 4-3 win and the additional point.
