Venus helps Blaze to four-point weekend
A man-of-the-match performance from Ross Venus helped the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze to a 6-3 victory over the Dundee Stars at the Skydome Arena.
The Blaze went into the game without influential forward David Broll who suffered a serious looking injury whilst blocking a shot the night before in victory over Manchester.
The Broll absence blow was softened at 7.50 when fellow associate captain Luke Ferrara continued his fine goal-scoring form to make it 1-0.
The Coventry lead was doubled shortly after when Johnny Curran finished expertly past Alex LeClerc at 9.32.
Before the Blaze fans had time to settle back into their seats it was 3-0 (10.58) when defenceman Justin Hache fired home. With an assist on the goal, academy product Venus leapt into the all-time top ten assist makers for Coventry.
A goal of his own came on the powerplay at 22.13 and at that point Venus and teammates might have thought the game was over (4-0), but the Stars were to offer a spirited fightback.
Elgin Pearce was first to score (28.56) on the powerplay before a Drydn Dow strike (40.39) got them back to within two (4-2).
When Kevin Dufour made it 4-3 at 45.37, the Skydome crowd might have feared the worst, but the supportive fan base got behind their team and were rewarded when Venus hit his second of the night on 46.15 to put some daylight between the two teams again.
Finally, with another assist going to Venus, Dillon Lawrence registered at 51.36 to end the game 6-3 and complete a four-point weekend for the Blaze.
