Triple-header ends with Caps defeat
Blaze ended a miserable triple-header in Scotland with an 8-2 defeat at Murrayfield against the Edinburgh Capitals.
Blaze fell behind at 6.28, Taylor MacDougall beating Brian Stewart for 1-0.
Tyler Plews doubled the Capitals lead shortly after (9.20) a blue-line shot sneaking through Stewart's pads and into the net for 2-0.
Penalties followed for both teams without any more scoring in the opening period, Caps though coming the closest hitting both Blaze posts.
Following two short 5-on-3 opportunities to start the middle period, Blaze found a way past Travis Fullerton in the Edinburgh net at 28.25. A big shot from Josh Godfrey rebounding off the keeper, Captain Jordan Pietrus hammering home for 2-1.
A second for MacDougall followed to make it 3-1 Edinburgh on the powerplay at 30.13. In a penalty filled game, Caps grabbed a fourth short-handed at 35.42, Godfrey's shot blocked, bouncing over the Blaze defenceman to Matt Tipoff, scoring on the break-away.
Yevgeni Fyodorov made it 5-1 on the powerplay at 38.53, Caps' second with the man advantage.
Jared Staal added a sixth at 44.23, Capitals Man of the Match MacDougall then completing his hatrick for 7-1 at 52.30.
Barry Almeida grabbed a consolation goal for Coventry, his first for the club at 56.16 making it 7-2, then Staal bagged his second, Edinburgh's third on the powerplay for a final score of 8-2.
Head Coach Danny Stewart said, "It's the furthest thing from what we wanted this weekend. I just told these guys the damage was done on Friday. We had a poor start and then we were chasing. The third game of a 3-on-3 is always going to be tough. We were tired and low on confidence but we've got to find a way to pick ourselves up."
