Three in third leads Blaze to cup victory
Three goals in the third period were enough to see the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze secure an important 3-1 victory over the Cardiff Devils at the Skydome Arena in the Challenge Cup.
Whilst it took until 23.08 for the first goal to be scored through Cardiff Captain Joey Martin, the game caught fire after that.
At 30.23, the Devils had the first of three goals disallowed by referee Tom Darnell, and again they were denied on 30.53.
Several powerplay chances passed Coventry by as they were continuously frustrated by Cardiff’s back-up netminder Tom Murdy, starting the game ahead of Great Britain international Ben Bowns.
Finally, on 45.04 Finn Janne Laakonen tied the game at one, beating Murdy on a breakaway with the assist going to Luke Ferrara.
As per much of the game, it was Coventry who piled on the pressure after the equaliser, but the Devils thought they had re-gained the lead, only for the attempt to again be wiped out by the officials.
With tensions rising on the away team’s bench, their frustrations were confounded when Charles Corcoran sent the Skydome crowd into raptures with the game winning goal at 59.19.
Chasing an equaliser, Cardiff pulled Murdy for the extra skater and from long range, defenceman Justin Hamonic, assisted by goalie Jamie Phillips found the empty net for a final score of 3-1.
