Stewart seeking forward chemistry

Genting Casino Coventry Blaze Head Coach Danny Stewart says fans will see "a different look" side this weekend as he seeks to find added chemistry in his forward lines.

Canadian forward Matt Marquardt will be a welcome return to the line-up after he missed the two Challenge Cup defeats last weekend to take upon best man duties as a close friend’s wedding.

Blaze fell to Sheffield Steelers and Manchester Storm in what is set to be a competitive group B of the Challenge Cup, but despite disappointment of the results Stewart says he wasn’t unhappy with his team's efforts.

“It’s easy when you have a couple of losses to over-think things but I thought we put in two good performances. On Saturday it was unfortunate that we were in the box way too often giving them far too many opportunities to burn us and on Sunday night in Manchester we didn’t play a bad game at all, we put a lot of rubber on their net and just couldn’t find a way past him (Mike Clemente).

“I think if there was one area, on Saturday a couple of goals on transition, we turned pucks over and they ended up in the back of our net and that’s something we’ve been trying to tidy up. Teams are so good these days you just can’t give them extra opportunities and we’ll try to be a bit more direct this weekend.”

With Marquardt back and his team’s scoring rate slowing down from the great heights of pre-season, the coach who has significant options in his armoury, says he’ll look to switch things around a little as his side travel to South Wales to face Cardiff Devils in the Challenge Cup on Saturday before an Elite League fixture against the Nottingham Panthers on home ice, Sunday 5.15pm.

“I think you’ll see a different look this weekend, we have made a few adjustments. We were scoring freely in pre-season but obviously it’s different when you get into the competitive games, these are good hockey teams that we’re playing and good goaltending. Sometimes if it gets a little bit stale or whatever, we jig here and there and maybe putting a guy in a different might add some chemistry to a line.”
