Stewart brings in Czech goalie Kopriva
Following news that Miika Wiikman will be out of action for several weeks, Genting Casino Coventry Blaze Head Coach Danny Stewart has moved quickly to secure the services of 34-year-old Czech netminder Miroslav Kopriva.
The 6’4 left-catcher joins the club on a short-term basis boasting near 300 appearances in the Czech Extraliga, mainly with his hometown HC Kladno and HC Slavia Praha.
During that time, in 2010/11 he led the league for wins and in 2012/13, not only did he have the best goals against average of the regular season, but he also achieved the same accolade and best save percentage in the playoffs, leading Praha to a bronze medal.
Aside from his Czech experience, which extends to the second division where he won the Championship in 2014/15, Kopriva has appeared in the AHL and ECHL after being drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the 2003 NHL draft, round 6, 187th overall.
He has also played in Russia’s KHL and proudly represented his country at both junior and senior level.
The Blaze would like to thank the Booster Club once again, who have made a financial contribution to ensure Kopriva is here for the weekend home double header vs. Glasgow Clan on Saturday (7pm) and Sheffield Steelers on Sunday (5.15pm).
Stewart said, “Miroslav has a huge amount of experience in top leagues around the world. He’s a big body and will be more than capable of coming in and help us win games in the absence of Miika. ‘Heds’ (Jordan Hedley) did a great job for us on the weekend, but we need two capable goalies the next month or so with some massive games coming up!”
