Stewart beats competition to sign Johnston

As exclusively revealed on Justine Greene's BBC Coventry and Warwick Sunday morning radio show, Genting Casino Coventry Blaze Head Coach Danny Stewart has fought off strong competition to land the signing of 27-year-old Canadian forward Andrew Johnston.

The 6’1” centre, who can also play left-wing joins the club following two years in France with Chamonix and Bordeaux where he iced in 101 regular and post season games posting an impressive 99 points (35 goals, 64 assists).

In 2017/18, as associate Captain of Chamonix, he led the team with most goals, assists and points and appeared in the Ligue Magnus All-Star game. With Bordeaux over 2018/19 he produced most assists and points.

Prior he was a Champion of the Hungarian Erste Liga with DVTK Jegesmedvék where again he proved a huge offensive threat scoring 24 goals, 33 assists for 57 points in 55 regular season and playoff games. He also appeared the club’s Continental Cup campaign playing three times with a goal and 2 assists.

Before the three years in Europe and after signing an entry-level contract with the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers in 2012, Johnston shared time between the AHL and ECHL playing a total of 207 games with 55 points.

His junior career was spent with the Humboldt Broncos and Flin Flon Bombers in the SJHL where he amassed a considerable 215 points (95 goals, 120 assists) in 206 regular season and playoff matches.

With Humboldt in 2011/12, he was a SJHL Champion and the RBC Cup top forward and top scorer. The year previous (2010/11) with Flin Flon, he was named in the SJHL Second All-Star Team.

Over the 2019/20 season, Johnston will combine his playing duties with study at Coventry University Business School.

Head Coach Danny Stewart said, “Andrew is an exciting player who has led his team in scoring the past two seasons. There was a lot of interest in him, and so we’re really pleased to have got his signature. We again must thank our partnership with Coventry University for helping us attract a player of Andrew’s calibre. He brings us speed up the middle, and production that we are looking to add with our last few signings. He’s a dynamic player who can play in all situations and has great size to go along with it.”

Johnston commented, “I’m very excited to be coming to Coventry to play for the Blaze as well as studying at the University. The league is improving every year with great players signing here as well as Great Britain’s performance at the World Championships. The school package is very important to me and a big draw for me to come to Coventry. Ian Webster has made me feel very comfortable and the relationship they have with the team is invaluable. As a player I like to play in all situations and really thrive on offense. I’m looking forward to a winning season with the Blaze.”
