Preview: Blaze vs. Clan (13/11/16)

Genting Casino Coventry Blaze will take on the Braehead Clan for the first time this season at the Skydome Arena tomorrow (13th November - 5.15pm face-off).

The Glasgow based side currently sit last place in the Elite League (8 points from 12 fixtures), with a game this evening against the Manchester Storm. A win would see Ryan Finnerty’s men leap-frog Blaze who stand 8th with 9 points from 12 played.

In his second year with the club, Alex Leavitt leads the Clan for points (Challenge Cup and Elite League combined - 6+15=21 in 21), closely followed by a new face, Matt Beca (9+11=20 in 21). The 30-year-old Canadian a Kelly Cup Champion, alongside Blaze's Matt Marquardt with the Florida Everblades in 2011/12.

Scott Pitt, who has registered over a point-per-game since joining the Clan in 2014, has again started the 16/17 season well, leading the team with 10 goals, also adding 9 assists in the 21 games.

Corey Cowick is another new name on the Scottish sides forward lines to look out for. The 6'2" former draft-pick of the Ottawa Senators is well known for his rugged style of play, picking up 40 penalty minutes so far, as well as 8 goals and 11 assists in 21.

Speaking of players who like to play a physical game, it'll be difficult to miss 6'3" Jay Rosehill, a toughie of near 120 NHL games and over 450 in the AHL, registering upwards of 2,000 career penalty minutes, 102 so far with the Clan.

On defence, Kyle Wharton provides the main offensive threat (3+6 so far) whilst 6'3" Lee Baldwin with experience in the AHL, ECHL, Denmark and Germany's DEL2 offers a strong defensive presence.

With starting netminder Michal Zajkowski side-lined with injury, Scottish born Gary Russell looks set to get the nod in net. With a save-percentage of over 90% in the 300+ minutes played so far, the loss of the Swedish number one has been well covered by the deputy.

On the Blaze side, Great Britain International Ben Davies is set to make his home debut against the club where he spent two seasons previously, posting over 60 points in 117 appearances.

Matt Marquardt continues to hold the lead for points on the season, 17 in 18 games played (3+14), whilst Josh Godfrey, with two rocket shots on the powerplay last weekend, and Captain Jordan Pietrus with a double on Sunday both moved ahead of Robin Bergman for goals with 6 each in 19 and 20 games respectively (both with 6 assists too).
