Panthers find way past Blaze on New Years Eve
Two goals in the final five minutes helped the Nottingham Panthers to a 5-3 New Years Eve victory over the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze.
On the back of a home victory over Nottingham on Saturday, the Blaze began the game well but were frustrated by Michael Garnett getting the start in net over Patrick Munson.
The opener came on 17.57 through the Elite League’s top goal-scorer Alex Guptill showing good patience to beat Miroslav Kopriva on the powerplay.
With the man advantage, Blaze got themselves level through Tim Crowder winning a scramble in front of Garnett at 23.15.
A near capacity crowd of 7,000 then saw Dylan Richard (25.04) and Robert Farmer (35.22) put the home side 3-1 up before a reply came from Blaze Captain Kevin Morris (36.25), the goal to make it 3-2 being given following a video review.
At 45.08, Nicolai Bryhnisveen snapped a shot past Garnett celebrating the equaliser with a blown kiss towards the Blaze supporters.
With the clock ticking down, a Stevie Lee effort rebounded out to fellow GB International Brett Perlini who made no mistake for 4-3 (54.36). Shortly after, and despite a late 6-on-3 powerplay opportunity, a long range effort from Dylan Olsen (56.24) put the game beyond Coventry (5-3).
