Number of Blaze departures confirmed

The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze can confirm a number of players leaving the club after their contracts expired following the 2016/17 Elite League season.

#41 Brian Stewart

A Playoff Champion with the club in his debut season 2014/15, Stewart departs with an MBA from Coventry University. Playing over 200 games, the Canadian ends his time with Coventry second in the all-time list of Man of the Match awards.

After announcing his departure on Instagram this weekend, the Blaze took the opportunity to thank Stewart for his three years service:

#15 Josh Godfrey

The Candian defenceman who also studied for an MBA at Coventry University during his time in the Midlands contributed over 40 points, helping the team reach the playoff final in his debut season.

#5 Ben Davies

The British forward joined Blaze in November of last year icing 39 times, posting 4 goals and 10 assists. The former Cardiff Devil and Braehead Clan player will move to Elite League newbie's, the Guildford Flames for the 2017/18 season.

#28 Matt Marquardt

The former Kelly Cup winner joined Blaze last summer going on to post 14 goals, 28 assists in 58 Elite League competition games.

#22 Marc Cantin

The 6'1" defenceman who won the Memorial Cup in 2010, played 44 times for the club scoring 5 goals and 15 assists.

#14 T.J. Syner and #9 Barry Almedia

The American cousins joined Blaze in November of the past season, making an instant impact. Almeida, whose goal against the Cardiff Devils in February was named goal of the season, netted 15 times and added 25 assists in 39 games. Syner, who picked up the Blaze forward of the year award, also scoring 15 times with 28 assists in 39 games. The pair intend to remain in North America for next season.

#27 Shawn Boutin

The 27-year-old defenceman who joined the club last summer from the ECHL, iced 57 times for the Blaze picking up 5 goals, 11 assists.

The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze would like to thank all of the players listed for their contribution and wish them well for the future.

American defenceman Jim Jorgensen has also been confirmed as moving on (more info) whilst the club's all-time record appearance holder Russell Cowley has announced his retirement (read more).

News on the remaining players from last season's roster will be forthcoming as decisions are made from both sides.

An update and reflection from Head Coach Danny Stewart on the departures confirmed so far will be made available later this week.
