Miner Barron double completes 4-point weekend

The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze secured a welcome four-point weekend, defeating local rivals Milton Keynes 4-3 at the Skydome Arena.

Defenceman Alex Miner Barron put in a Man of the Match performance registering two goals on the night.

With Adam Courchaine and Luke Ferrara out injured, Dax Lauwers returned to the line-up with Gaelan Patterson jumping into a forward position.

The Canadian, who caused MK trouble all night with his speed opened the scoring (1.27) before Brett Robinson on the powerplay extended his point scoring streak to seven games to make it 2-0 (8.09). Both were carbon copies of each other with Blaze winning puck battles in front of MK goalie Miika Wiikman, gaining their just reward.

On a short-handed effort Denny Kearney cut the deficit to one (10.32), Carl Hudson with his first of two then tying the game 2-2 (12.57).

with just 15 seconds remaining of the back and forth opening period, Miner Barron gave Coventry the crucial advantage on the powerplay (19.45). Blaze going 2/7 overall, MK 1-7.

In an evenly contested middle twenty, there was just the single goal, Miner Barron's second (37.47) making it a 4-2 game.

Hudson's second came on the powerplay (51.29) for 3-4, before Marco Vallerand was awarded a penalty-shot, failing though to beat Wiikman.

With the clock ticking down,  Lightning pulled the goalie from their net but as per the night before, Blaze dug deep to secure a second consecutive one goal victory and the four-point weekend.

The victory meant Kevin White, who was invited on to the Coventry bench for a third time retained his 100%-win record as “Coach Kev”. The long-time supporter of the club who is battling Cancer receiving a standing ovation from the home and away crowd during the game.

Head Coach Danny Stewart said, “Credit to the guys. They had a rough weekend last week and to bounce back the way they did, I’m happy for them. It’s a big step for us. By no means have we turned a corner, it’s a good weekend but we have to continue on. We’ll get some rest in the next couple of days and turn our attention to Manchester on Wednesday.”
