Hedley helps Blaze spoil Devils' 100th
Following a concerning injury to number one Czech netminder Miroslav Kopriva, the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze, backed by Brit Jordan Hedley secured a 4-6 victory over the Cardiff Devils in their 100th game at Ice Arena Wales.
With just under 9 minutes played, Kopriva was stretchered from the ice following an accidental collision with a teammate and the game struggled to regain momentum in the first with both teams going scoreless through 20 minutes.
The same couldn’t be said for the second though with eight goals leading to a 3-5 Coventry lead.
Kevin Morris (25.25) and Alex Nikiforuk (26.04), both registered on the powerplay with other strikes past GB International Ben Bowns coming from Kelin Ainsworth (28.38), Tim Crowder (29.06) and Alex Forbes (39.12).
The Devils, who scored first through Bryce Reddick on the man advantage (23.18), also had replies from Sean Bentivoglio (26.53) and Gleason Fournier (32.42).
Carrying forward the momentum from a full two minute 5-on-3 penalty kill late in the middle period, the Devils began the final twenty with a fourth goal through Charles Linglet (43.56).
With Hedley standing strong, Blaze weren't to let the result slip as Crowder broke free scoring one-on-one (49.09) to secure his second of the night and an outstanding 4-6 road victory.
The following morning, it was confirmed that Kopriva should not have suffered any long-term damage and after spending the night in a Cardiff hospital was on his way back to Coventry.
