Fullerton helps Flames extinguish Blaze

Blaze 0
Flames 3

A man-of-the-match performance by netminder Travis Fullerton backstopped the Guildford Flames to a 0-3 win over the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze in the final pre-season game at the Skydome Arena.

The Blaze were without Finnish forward Janne Laakkonen as a precautionary measure but included young two-way defenceman Oliver Lord and forward Zach Milton from Bracknell Bees. The Flames were at full strength.

Guildford took the lead just after the halfway point of the first period. Penalties to Blaze defenceman Justin Hache and forward David Broll gave the Flames a five-on-three powerplay opportunity and Kruise Reddick took advantage, beating Blaze netminder Jamie Phillips at 12.49.

Just over three minutes later Guildford extended their lead when John Dunbar found the net from an assist by Ian Watters at 15.56.

With the game becoming a rather testy and penalty-strewn affair, Guildford added a third goal just 26 seconds into the second period when Watters turned goal scorer, assisted by Reddick, after a breakdown in the Blaze defensive zone.

In the third period the Blaze created more offensive chances, with defenceman Dillon Eichstadt hitting the post and Fullerton pulling off a number of saves, with stops to deny Blaze man-of-the-match Broll and Matt Pohlkamp standing out.
