Captain grabs late Blaze win
Genting Casino Coventry Blaze grabbed a last-gasp winner to defeat the Braehead Clan 3-2 in the Elite League.
Blaze were without Swedish forward Robin Bergman through illness, whilst the Clan began the game with Scottish netminder Gary Russell in net, deputising for the injured Michal Zajkowsli.
Following a touching ceremony for Remembrance Sunday, the action went back and forth to start the game. The opening goal eventually coming through Liam Stewart, his third of the year, assisted by Ben Davies making his home debut against his former team.
Losing defenceman Josh Godfrey in the middle period, Blaze lost their lead at 27.17, Scott Pitt the scorer on the powerplay following a 2+2 high-sticking penalty on Marc Cantin.
The Glasgow based side then took the lead at 37.02, Matt Beca the scorer to end the middle period 1-2.
The game was tied 2-2 at 33.33, Blaze Man of the Match Davies adding to the earlier assist with his first goal for the club.
With both teams coming close in the final period, the game-winning goal came with just 20 seconds left, Captain Jordan Pietrus with his seventh of the season taking advantage of an odd man rush for 3-2 sending a noisy Skydome crowd into raptures.
Head Coach Danny Stewart said, "The guys showed a lot of character, probably more than most people know. We’ve had a bad sickness run through the camp this week, I think we’ve had ten guys puking. Friday we had three of them playing whilst they were puking, three more yesterday, and obviously Bergman today. Godfrey didn’t last the match, Tait got injured, we got short bodied, so I tell you what it was a gutsy performance by the guys.”
