Bombis double downs Trappers
Two goals from German forward Bjorn Bombis helped Genting Casino Coventry Blaze to a second successive pre-season victory at the Skydome Arena this evening, defeating Dutch opponents Tilburg Trappers by a score of 3-2.
Head Coach Danny Stewart welcomed back Brett Robinson after illness and Marc Cantin jumped straight into the line-up after arriving to the UK yesterday. British forward Russ Cowley again missed out as a precaution.
Bombis opened the scoring early (1.11) before a Mitch Bruijsten double put the Trappers ahead (7.34) and (21.30).
A big shot from Matt Marquardt was then tipped into the net for Bombis’ second, tying the game at two and later earning the Blaze number 18 a Man of the Match award.
Despite an extended period on the powerplay it took some time for Blaze to find a game winning goal which eventually came at the hands of defenceman Shawn Boutin with 11 minutes remaining in the game.
Blaze will now look to keep their hot streak going with a Bank Holiday home fixture against Elite League rivals the Cardiff Devils. Face-off 4pm at the Skydome Arena.
Head Coach Danny Stewart said: "It was a tight game, probably a lot tighter than I expected but that was a good thing. I thought the last half of the game we were much better. Credit to Tilburg they played a hard game and made us work."
