Blaze secure big road victory in Dundee
Genting Casino Coventry Blaze secured a crucial 0-4 road win at the Dundee Ice Arena in the race for an Elite League Playoff spot.
Danny Stewart was again without the trio of defencemen (Noble, Jorgensen and Godfrey) as his side took the long bus ride to Scotland to take on a Dundee side (9th), just one point behind Blaze outside of the playoff placings ahead of face-off.
Despite receiving three minor penalties in the opening period, T.J. Syner (7.02) and Liam Stewart (13.29) got Coventry off to the perfect start. Marc Cantin registering an assist on both goals. Out-shooting their opponents 7-13, Blaze went to the locker room in control (0-2).
The middle 20 minutes saw chances for both teams, former Blaze forward Cale Tanaka coming close for the Stars, before Coventry Captain Jordan Pietrus hit the pipes in his 100th Elite League competition game.
With just 35 seconds remaining in the second, in 4-on-4 play, Barry Almeida with a quick wrist-shot extended the Blaze lead to three (39.25).
Into the final period and Swedish forward Robin Bergman with his 11th of the Elite League season (highest on the team) ended the scoring on 49.17 (0-4).
With a 26 shot shut-out, Brian Stewart picked up a deserved Man of the Match award for Coventry.
Head Coach Danny Stewart said, “It’s not an easy to rink to come into especially with the trip up, but we just wanted to stick to our strengths which is our speed. We created a lot of opportunities early and were fortunate enough to bury a couple and we hung on from then. Credit to the guys, they came in here, played a smart road game and executed.”
