Blaze make first trip to Murrayfield
Genting Casino Coventry Blaze make their first trip to Murrayfield Ice Rink tonight to face-off against the Edinburgh Capitals (6pm).
Under player/coach Michal Dobron the Scottish side have made a positive start to the season, not least by qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup.
Jared Stall, brother of Eric, Marc and Jordan who all play in the NHL, leads the Caps in point-scoring with 12 (6+6) in 10 league and cup games. Other threats for Blaze on the forward lines, include 35-year-old, long-time KHLer, Yevgeni Fyodorov (3+3), former number one draft pick by the Chicago Blackhawks, Pavel Vorobyev (4+2) and in his first pro season, straight out of the CIS, Canadian forward Mason Wilgosh (4+1).
On defence, Captain Jacob Johnston continues to stand out. The 28-year-old in his second year with the Caps, his first cut short through injury, has already amassed 8 assists, proving again to be almost a point-per-game provider from the blue-line.
One other name to pick out from the Edinburgh defence is Czech, Jaroslav Hertl. For those Blaze fans who were paying close attention, you'd have seen the 6'3", 26-year-old playing against Coventry in the Continental Cup for Tychy last season.
In net, former Braehead Clan goalie Travis Fullerton provides a strong back-bone posting a save-percentage well over 90% in league and cup games played thus far.
Blaze's only other trip to Scotland so far this season was a disappointing 4-1 defeat to the Fife Flyers and Head Coach Danny Stewart will be hoping for better this time around.
The Caps have struggled on the penalty-kill to start the year, sitting last over all league and cup games played so far - 75% currently on home ice. Blaze will be looking to take advantage of that and improve on their 12.5% powerplay when on the road.
Blaze Head Coach Danny Stewart commented, “As far as I’m concerned it’s a must win game. We cannot afford to go weekends without any points. You’ve got to play a little different in Murrayfield. Going from the Skydome to a rink that’s almost twice the size. It’s a more puck possession game and we’ve got to have some composure on the puck. You’ve got to play together because you can’t get spread out in that rink.”
