Blaze endure heavy Storm defeat
The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze endured a heavy 9-1 defeat at the hands of Patton Conference rivals Manchester Storm at the Altrincham Ice Dome.
With Head Coach Danny Stewart suspended for the game due to an abuse of official penalty in the previous game vs. Cardiff Devils, long-time player and Head of Hockey Operations James Pease took charge of the Blaze bench.
British forward Ciaran Long opened the scoring early (1.13) before Blaze conceded two more in quick concession. Dane Byers (12.25) and Mike Hammond (12.54), who ended up with four on the night made it 3-0 before the first period break.
The second Hammond marker came at 23.43, Byers then with his second made it 5-0 on 35.54. Before the middle period was to come to a miserable end for Coventry, Matt Beca made it 6-0 (39.26), the assists going to Long and Scott Pitt who each enjoyed a total of three points.
With Welsh goalie Brython Preece replacing Canadian Kevin Nastiuk for the final twenty minutes in the Blaze net, Captain Jordan Pietrus broke the Mike Clemente shut-out at the other end on the powerplay (44.56), Coventry going 1/2, Manchester 2/5.
Two more from Mike Hammond (47.02 and 53.31), both assisted by Byers made it 8-1. The pair totalling five points each.
Scott Pitt ended the rout (55.36) for a final score of 9-1.
