Blaze defeated in first pre-season game

Panthers 4
v
Blaze 2

The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze were defeated 4-2 in their opening pre-season game at the Motorpoint Arena vs. Nottingham Panthers.

With just over 12 minutes gone in the game, Finnish forward Janne Laakkonen registered Blaze’s first goal of the season shooting into the feet of Nottingham goalie Kevin Carr who inadvertently directed the puck into his own net.

The home side were level before the first period break as Swede Adam Deutsch beat Jamie Phillips in the Blaze goal with a screened shot from the point.

Just before the half-way mark Nottingham took the lead as Brett Bulmer found space going on to score one-on-one for 2-1.

On a powerplay British forward Ollie Betteridge made it 3-1 before Sam Herr showed his AHL quality to extend Nottingham’s lead to 4-1.

The scoring was wrapped up late in the second period as Charles Corcoran opened his Coventry account for 4-2.

With Hedley replacing Phillips in the Blaze goal for the third period, neither netminder was to be beaten and the Panthers skated off the ice with the pre-season win and Aladdin Cup that was attached to the fixture.

HC Danny Stewart said, “It was a good pre-season workout for us. There were plenty of positives and things to be optimistic about. Glad to get a game under our belt to see where we are and where we need to get to.”
