Blaze capture Marc-Olivier Vallerand
The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze are thrilled to announce the signing of 28-year-old Canadian forward Marc-Olivier Vallerand.
The Longueuil, Quebec native joins the club following a successful season in the well respected Austrian EBEL with HC Bolzano-Bozen. In 61 games, the left-shooter's 27 points (15+12) helped the Italian based side to a 4th place regular season finish and playoff semi-final berth.
Vallerand's European experience also extends to time in the Swiss NLB, Denmark's Metal Ligaen and a hugely productive year in Italy's Serie A where in 2014/15 his 32 goals (plus 25 assists for 57 points) in 34 games led the league for scoring.
Before establishing a career in Europe, Vallerand was a stand-out in the ECHL with the Greenville Road Warriors. Over four years (2010-14), his 115 goals, 130 assists for 245 points in 272 regular season and Kelly Cup Playoff games see's him top the Greenville leaderboard for all-time goals, assists and points.
Vallerand's first ECHL season saw him lead all rookies for scoring with 28 goals, representing the Road Warriors at the 2011 All-Star Classic where he scored and provided two assists in the game.
His stellar play in the ECHL also earned the dynamic winger a number of call-ups to the AHL with Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Rockford Ice Hogs and Norfolk Admirals.
Before turning pro, Vallerand's college career was spent with the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL where as Captain in 2009/10, his team-leading 7 playoff goals led the major junior side to a second consecutive Telus East Division Championship.
In total from 2006-10, Vallerand's record with the Remparts reads 267 games played, 90 goals, 111 assists for 201 points. The two-way side of his game was also well recognised in 2007/08, being awarded the Gaetan Duchesne trophy for best defensive forward.
Head Coach Danny Stewart said, "We wanted to get a little more dynamic up front and with Marc, we have done that. He has consistently put the puck in the net wherever he's played and that's something we needed a bit more of. He has top end speed at this level and brings us that element of skill we were looking for at the same time. He will be here to score no doubt, but what I also liked is that he's a player that can create opportunities for other guys as well and plays hard 200 feet. This is a big signing for us and will compliment our current group very well."
Marc-Olivier Vallerand commented, "I'm super excited to have a fresh start and be a big part of a successful year in Coventry! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone from my teammates, to the staff and to the fans. I'll give my heart out on the ice and hopefully score a couple of game winning goals! I've heard a lot of good things about the country and the league plus Danny and Robbo (my ex-teammate) worked really hard to make this deal work and i'm just glad it did! From the first phone call I could feel the love and that's a great thing for a player."
