Blaze and Panthers play friendly

The Coventry Blaze participated in a friendly match-up ahead of the Elite Series against the Nottingham Panthers on Thursday, losing 6-1.

The Blaze went into the game without first draft-pick Mike Hammond who flew into the UK on the game-day, defenceman Paul Swindlehurst through injury and associate captain Luke Ferrara who is participating in Polish playoff finals with Krakow.

Sam Duggan opened the scoring early for the Blaze, beating Ben Bowns in the Panthers goal from a rebound at 3.52.

The score was tied at 13.25 as Panthers' Brendan Ellis shot through Shane Owen's legs to make it 1-1.

In the second period, offensive-defenceman Nicolai Bryhnisveen nearly put the Blaze ahead again, only for the puck to bounce narrowly wide of Bowns' post.

At 35.10, Nottingham's Robert Lachowicz was rewarded for his hard-work winning a puck-battle and driving to the net to make it 2-1.

Prolific scorer at USports level, Christophe Boivin then fired home a cross-ice pass from Kevin Domingue for 3-1 at 38.57.

In the third period, the Panthers scored three in quick concession through Boivin again (53.12), Domingue (53.36) and Mark Matheson (54.37) to give a final score of 6-1.

The Elite Series begins this weekend as the Blaze face the Manchester Storm (2pm) before taking on the Nottingham Panthers again on Sunday (7pm).
