Bebris aiming for full-time deal with Blaze
Edgars Bebris is hoping to turn an unexpected opportunity with the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze into his first full-time Elite League contract.
The 26-year-old Latvian-born forward joined the Blaze on a short-term deal earlier this month which will see him take part in the team’s training camp and play in the club’s seven pre-season games, the first of which is against the Manchester Storm on Wednesday night (7.30pm).
The 6ft 4in left shooter told Chris Pryke at the Blaze media day that he is determined to use his time at the Skydome Arena to impress Head Coach Danny Stewart and earn a permanent spot on the Blaze roster.
“I was speaking to a lot of teams and wanted to move up to the Elite League. That was my aim – to get a chance in the Elite League. Danny gave me this opportunity and I’m pleased about it,” Edgars said.
“As a player you want to play at the highest level you can, so for me I just want to play and become the best player I can. I’m just going to play my best hockey and if Danny likes it I guess they’re going to sign me, I’m hoping.”
The Latvian is no stranger to British ice hockey, having spent the last seven years playing in the now defunct English Premier League for the Sheffield Steeldogs, Manchester Phoenix and Peterborough Phantoms.
During that time he appeared in 364 regular season games, totalling 132 goals and 187 assists for 319 points, and winning the EPL playoffs in 2014/15 with Peterborough.
That success with the Phantoms occured on the Skydome Ice in Coventry where the EPL playoff finals weekend took place, but for those who haven't been fortunate enough to see Edgars play he concludes:
“I’m pretty good in the corners, battling for loose pucks, and taking the game to the net.”
See Bebris and the brand new Blaze team in action for the first time at the Skydome Arena on Wednesday (23rd August) 7.30pm.
