Milestone marker in vain
Captain Ashley Tait marked his 700th game in all Elite League competitions with a goal - but Genting Casino Coventry Blaze went down 5-2 to their nemesis Cardiff Devils at the Skydome.
The 40 year-old forward became only the sixth player to reach that milestone, following Jason Hewitt, Jonathan Phillips, Mark Thomas, Phil Hill and Blaze team-mate Russell Cowley.
Tait got the go-ahead goal for Blaze on the powerplay at 13.08 - his 10th marker of the season - but Joey Haddad tied it up just 109 seconds later.
Zach Hervato (29.25) nudged Devils in front only for Blaze to strike on the powerplay for the second time with Drew Fisher's ninth of the campaign making it 2-2 at 34.50.
Guillaume Doucet (38.36) restored Devils' advantage before quick-fire final-period goals from Joey Martin (41.56) and Jake Morissette (42.21 short-handed) wrapped up victory.
"They took advantage of their opportunities. It was a 3-2 hockey game and we had a bad 21 second stretch where they made it 4-2, 5-2 off the faceoff and the shorthanded goal. I told the boys after the game we were just off by a foot here and a foot there.
"For some reason we just don't get that puck luck against these guys, part of it is because of the sacrifice and how hard they work... I thought at times we deserved a better fate but when it gets away from you 4-2, 5-2 like that it's tough to come back." - Head Coach Chuck Weber
On his Captain's milestone Weber added:
"Ash is the epitome of a professional, he takes care of himself, he wants to win, it's all about the team. He plays a lot of vital minutes for us. It's disappointing not to get the win for him in his 700th Elite League game but it was a great goal by him, a great finish. I'm curious to see where the end point is for him because I think he's still got a lot of games left in the tank."

"Obviously the result didn't go the right way, that's first and foremost but it's a nice milestone to get to. I've been bewildered by the amount of messages I've received... It's been a real nice couple of days." - #21 Ashley Tait
"Any time you lose it's frustrating. It just felt like we couldn't generate as much as we would have liked. I still think we are moving in the right direction, we just need to find a way to bring complete effort every night on a consistent basis." - #16 Jordan Pietrus:
