25 for 25 Item 14: Finnerty Championship ring

13 items of the 25 for 25 auction down, 12 (at least) to go....

Item 14 is a special one, generously donated by Braehead Clan Head Coach Ryan Finnerty - a 2008/09 Sheffield Steelers Double Winners Championship ring - made by the same people who created the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup rings!

The Steelers under Dave Matsos completed an Elite League and Playoff double, finishing with 89 points, 11 ahead of the Coventry Blaze in second place, and then beating Nottingham Panthers 2-0 in the playoff final.

Such rings are special in the game of hockey, but 'Finner', a veteran of 300 Elite League games says he is privileged to offer someone the opportunity to own this piece of history in support, firstly of Adam Calder in his fight against cancer but also in aid of his former teammate in Cardiff, Scott Matzka.

Matzka, 38 years old was diagnosed with ALS in September 2015 and although there is no cure at present, Scott has built the "My Turn" organisation which in his own words "has  become a movement, a mantra and a mission. While I have the ability, I’m going to take my turn in doing everything I can to help people who are or will be affected by this terrible disease. It’s all about fighting for other people and spreading a message of hope. I know that my work will most likely not help me survive, but I hope that it will someday help others survive — and thrive." (Read Players Tribune article).

For Matza, in consideration of Finnerty being a past teammate, the Support 25 campaign and the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze feel it only appropriate that we take 'Our Turn'.

So, the winning amount for the Finnerty Championship ring will be split 50/50 between the 'Support 25' and 'My Turn' campaigns.

We would also like to take this time to say a specific thank you to Scott for his kind donation to Adam Calder and the Support 25 campaign.
