Olson blow for Blaze

Genting Casino Coventry Blaze coach Matt Soderstrom has confirmed Canadian defenceman Benn Olson will be sidelined for six to eight weeks with a broken hand.

The 26-year-old sustained the injury after blocking a shot during the second period of Saturday's 3-2 overtime defeat to Sheffield Steelers at Sheffield Arena in the Challenge Cup.

Olson is due to visit a specialist on Monday with surgery expected later in the week.

Speaking after Sunday's 6-1 home cup reverse to Nottingham Panthers, Soderstrom said: "Benn is going to be missing for quite some time.

"He blocked a shot with his hand and he is going to need surgery which unfortunately means he will be out for six to eight weeks.

"It seems the injury curse at Coventry Blaze has not been broken but that's hockey, it's one of those things.

"Benn has been one of our better players this season. He has been fantastic defensively and has been making some nice plays. Whenever any team loses one of their top guys it will hurt but we are just going to have to dig deep."

Blaze take on Belfast Giants at the Skydome in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League Erhardt Conference on Sunday October 13 (5.15pm face-off). Tickets can be purchased by ringing the Box Office on 02476 630693 (option 0).
