Former NHLer Joins Blaze

Genting Casino Coventry Blaze can confirm the signing of former National Hockey League forward Ryan O’Marra for the 2014/15 Elite League campaign.

The Tokyo-born 26-year-old was a first-round draft pick (15th overall) for New York Islanders in 2005 and has featured 33 times in ‘The Show’, posting seven points (one goal and six assists).

O’Marra, a former Canada junior international, also has 299 American Hockey League regular-season and play-off games under his belt, totalling 89 points (30 goals and 59 assists).

For the past two years, O’Marra - who accumulated 241 points (105 goals and 136 assists) in 252 games in the Ontario Hockey League - has been in Europe, playing in Finland, Italy and Norway.

Coach Marc LeFebvre said: “I am very excited to have Ryan and his partner Chelsea as part of the Blaze family this season. Ryan's experience and calibre is a major boost for our ambitions we have as a club.

"He will bring invaluable experience and professionalism to our dressing room and our on-ice product. He was able to make it to the top level of our game through hard work.

"He's not the fanciest player in the world but he has been successful through his blue-collar work ethic and desire to be the best he can in all areas of his game.

"I am expecting Ryan to be a gritty two-way forward. He is great on face-offs and that's one area I felt we needed to improve in, especially in key situations.

"Just like Steven Goertzen, I think Ryan's professionalism will also help our young British players."

O’Marra joins Mike Egener, Cale Tanaka, Ashley Tait, Russell Cowley, Ross Venus, James Griffin, Steven Chalmers, Mark Smith, Steven Goertzen and Connor Ranby on the Blaze roster for the 2014/15 season.
